Get Your Reps In
Sometimes we think that mastery is a matter of genetics or luck. In actuality, those who master their craft have spent a lot of time ‘getting their reps in’. By this I mean that they practices hundreds and probably thousands of times before people stood back and said ‘WOW!’.
I appreciated learning more about this principle in Jon Accuf’s book entitled ‘Start’. In it he encourages people to start getting in their reps wherever they are at in their developmental journey. He takes the mystery out the process of mastery, excelling and success. Those who stand out about the crowd are simply those who have taken the time and effort to get in more reps than others.
One area where this is particularly relevant for me is in the area of speaking. I had aspirations that I would be able to impact 1000’s by speaking, but I only made real movement towards those aspirations as I found ways to get in as many reps as possible.
I remember the very first sermon I preached when I was 16 or 17 years old. When the message was done in 8 minutes I think the congregation thought I had only finished part one! Thankfully, over the years I have been able to get in many more reps. In particular, when I was able to begin speaking once or twice a week I saw my communication ability begin to really accelerate. Now I am blessed to speak at conferences/churches/colleges with a greater degree of confidence that I will communicate well and lives will be changed (my speaking page is here).
Whatever your craft and whatever your aspirations, take time each week to get in your reps!

I don’t like driving. I never really have. It could be because I witnessed a few fatal accidents when I was younger, plus I had a couple of my own accidents. After that, I opened the door and allowed fear to take up residence in me, it made itself right at home. I felt I […]
I have found that what stands between me and what I want in life is often one thing- hustle. Eighty percent of people say they have a book inside of them, but very few commit to the process. Eighty percent of people say that they want to improve their work life, but few are willing […]
Each year millions of leadership books fly off the shelves for one simple reason- leaders are often in over their heads! I have been there. I have been in many complex situations for which it seems impossible to find solutions. If you have been a leader at any level, you have run up against proverbial […]
Parenting can be exhausting. Children can give you sleepless nights whether they are teething, testing your limits or awkwardly asserting their independence. My wife Camille and I have found that parenting can bring some of the greatest joys and some of the greatest challenges in life! I have refrained to say much about parenting up to […]
Is finding work you love is about as likely as finding a unicorn?! I have always enjoyed helping others find their unique path in life, but I have had more than my share of mistakes and detours along the way! At the same time I have held on to the belief that finding work that I […]
I hate the feeling of waking up one day and wondering how I could have gotten myself into circumstances that are draining me. I had good intentions, but my actions took me in another direction*. Let’s say you were to launch a shuttle to the moon but you were off by just 2 degrees. You […]
I grew up expecting very little in life. The adults I grew up around had the mentality that we had no real control over our future. They had low expectations for almost anything, whether it be job fulfillment, financial abundance, people following through on their promises- you name it. I became internally conflicted when I began […]
In our part of the world, January is the coldest and darkest month of the year. Naturally, during this season people struggle with keeping up their motivation levels. While taking a sun vacation is a nice break, it is best to think about long-term, sustainable solutions that help you kick winter in the teeth! Here […]
Welcome to part 3 of a three-part series on the greatest determining factors of ministry success… Integrity is often defined as simply “being who you say you are” or “Doing what you say you do!” Integrity involves accountability systems and transparency. Integrity demands that your marketing message match your program/ministry activity. It ensures that when […]
